MATTHEW CLARKSON

POTTER AND PAINTER

Matthew has explored many different mediums to express his creativity — from writing and home building to gardening, pottery and painting.  His artistic journey started with a grandmother who painted.  To this day, the smell of turpentine takes him back to his childhood visiting his grandparents’ home that was filled with her paintings, easels, jars of brushes and canvas scattered about.

In college, he took his first pottery class and continued taking classes at Pottery Northwest in Seattle after he moved there for his first job.  Life, family and kids interjected a pause from pottery and it was not until he took a pottery class with his oldest son at Georgies in Portland that he re-ignited his passion for working with clay.  He was introduced to “hand building” which has opened up a new world of creativity, introducing texture and attachments to his forms.

Over the years, he has experimented with oils, watercolor, pen and ink, but he’s been intrigued with alcohol inks for the past while.  It’s an elusive medium that responds best to spontaneity and serendipity.

Matthew and his wife, Cheri, own Soaring Eagle Homes and build unique custom homes throughout Clark County.  Together they create spaces that energize and inspire people.
