CHERYL MATHIESON

OIL PAINTER

It’s exciting to visit a new place and experience the WOW of an overwhelming sense of color or feeling of light on an object; such as a field of golden grasses, emerald leaves on an eye-catching tree, a river on misty morning or an engaging face on a stranger across the room. These moments, which are sometimes fleeting and other times more of a permanent fixture, can be the inspiration for a painting that captures the beauty and spontaneity of everyday life.

Catching the light and its subsequent mood helps me find beauty in ordinary things, as well as the spectacular sunset. For me, the process of design is creating a plan with an end goal in mind, but in the studio as the paint goes down and form takes shape, there is always room for new ideas. However, with plein air painting there is usually only time to get an idea down before the sun changes everything. Then it’s time to start the next painting!

My background includes an Associate Degree in Commercial Art, a BA in Fine Art and a Masters in Art Therapy. I have studied painting with a variety of accomplished artists, including Jennifer Diehl and Gregg Kreutz, landscape artists Thomas Jefferson Kitts and Mitch Baird, and portrait painter Robin Damore.
