CHERYL MATHIESON
Oil Painter
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Cheryl Mathieson’s artistic journey is a testament to the power of rediscovery and passion reignited. Two decades ago, she embarked on a challenging task, painting a sprawling 70-foot mural at Harvest Church in Camas, Washington. This marked the pivotal moment when Cheryl returned to her first love, oil painting, after years spent navigating business and art-related ventures.
Transitioning from house paint for the mural to oils and gouache, Cheryl delved into exploring landscape, still life, and figure painting with renewed fervor. Armed with an Associate Degree in Commercial Art, a BA in Fine Art, and a Masters in Art Therapy, Cheryl tirelessly hones her craft. Her artistic evolution has been nurtured by esteemed mentors such as Gregg Kreutz, Jennifer Diehl, Thomas Jefferson Kitts, and Robin Damore.
Plein air painting emerged as Cheryl’s creative catalyst, igniting a profound transformation in her approach. Capturing the ephemeral dance of light and shadow outdoors, she crafts immersive experiences that resonate emotionally. As President of the Northwest Oil Painters Guild, Cheryl champions education, fellowship, and the advancement of fellow artists. For Cheryl, painting is a spiritual endeavor, a means of glorifying the Creator and reveling in His creation. Consequently, her work invites viewers into a world suffused with beauty and contemplation.
